Ingredients

For the Brisket:

4 lbs beef brisket

2 tablespoons kosher salt

2 tablespoons black pepper

1 tablespoon smoked paprika

1 tablespoon garlic powder

1 tablespoon onion powder

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

1 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

For the Homemade Barbecue Sauce:

1 cup ketchup

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)

1 tablespoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Salt to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Brisket:

    - Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).

      - In a small bowl, mix together kosher salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Rub this spice mixture all over the brisket, ensuring it's evenly coated.

        - Place the brisket in a large roasting pan. Pour the beef broth and apple cider vinegar around the brisket in the pan.

          Cook the Brisket:

            - Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven.

              - Cook for 4-5 hours, or until the brisket is fork-tender. Every hour, check on the brisket and baste it with the juices from the pan.

                Make the Barbecue Sauce:

                  - In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).

                    - Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly. Adjust salt to taste.

                      Finish the Brisket:

                        - Once the brisket is tender, remove it from the oven and uncover it. Increase the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C).

                          - Brush a generous amount of homemade barbecue sauce over the brisket, reserving some for serving. Return the brisket to the oven uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes to caramelize the sauce on top.

                            Serve:

                              - Allow the brisket to rest for at least 15 minutes before slicing against the grain.

                                - Serve the brisket slices drizzled with extra barbecue sauce and your choice of side dishes, such as coleslaw or baked beans.
