Ingredients

For the Danish pastry:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup milk, warm

1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the strawberry filling:

1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 teaspoon lemon juice

For the cream cheese glaze:

4 ounces cream cheese, softened

1 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Danish Pastry Dough:

    - In a bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.

      - In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

        - Stir in the yeast mixture, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.

          - Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for a minute. Shape it into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

            Make the Strawberry Filling:

              - In a saucepan over medium heat, combine sliced strawberries, sugar, cornstarch, and lemon juice. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool.

                Roll Out the Dough:

                  - Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

                    - Once the dough has chilled, roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.

                      - Fold the dough in thirds like a letter and then roll it out again. Repeat this process a couple of times to create layers, then roll out into a large rectangle.

                        Shape the Danish:

                          - Cut the dough into squares (about 4x4 inches).

                            - Place a spoonful of the strawberry filling in the center of each square.

                              - Fold the corners of each square toward the center, pinching them to secure the filling. Alternatively, you can create twists or braids for a different presentation.

                                Bake the Danish:

                                  - Place the pastries on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one. Allow to rise for 15-20 minutes.

                                    - Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and puffed.

                                      Prepare the Cream Cheese Glaze:

                                        - In a mixing bowl, beat together softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.

                                          Finish and Serve:

                                            - Allow the Danish to cool slightly, then drizzle the cream cheese glaze over the top.

                                              - Enjoy your delicious Strawberry Danish warm or at room temperature.
