Ingredients

1 loaf of day-old bread (about 10-12 cups, cubed)

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1 medium onion, diced

3 celery stalks, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried sage)

1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

2-3 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth

2 large eggs, beaten (optional for binding)

1/2 cup dried cranberries or chopped pecans (optional for added texture and flavor)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Place the cubed bread on a large baking sheet and toast in the oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until lightly golden and dried out. Remove from oven and let cool slightly.

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and celery, sautéing for 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables are softened.

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes, sautéed vegetable mixture, parsley, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper. Toss everything gently to combine.

Gradually add the broth, a cup at a time, mixing until the stuffing is moist but not soggy. If using, stir in the beaten eggs for added richness and binding.

Fold in cranberries or pecans if using.

Transfer the stuffing mixture to a greased baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil.

Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is crisp and golden brown.

Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your delicious homemade stuffing!
