Ingredients

12 lasagna noodles

1 lb ground beef

1 onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

28 oz can crushed tomatoes

6 oz tomato paste

2 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

15 oz ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Noodles: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic until the meat is browned and the onion is translucent. Drain excess fat.

Add Tomatoes and Seasoning: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Mix Ricotta Cheese: In a bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, a pinch of salt, and a little pepper. Mix well until creamy.

Assemble the Lasagna: In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom. Layer 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, then add a layer of meat sauce, followed by a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layering process one more time. For the top layer, place the remaining noodles, cover with the remaining meat sauce, and top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, spray the foil with cooking spray). Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Rest Before Serving: Let the lasagna sit for about 15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
