Ingredients

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup water

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 tablespoon white vinegar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional: powdered sugar or frosting for serving

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch (or similar size) baking pan with a light coating of oil or non-stick spray.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well blended.

In a separate bowl, mix together the water, vegetable oil, vinegar, and vanilla extract.

Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined; do not overmix. The batter will be somewhat thin, which is perfectly normal.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly.

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan for about 10-15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar or your favorite frosting, if desired, before slicing and serving.

                  Prep Time: 10 minutes | Total Time: 45-50 minutes | Servings: 9-12
