Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef for meatballs
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs preferably plain or panko
  • 1/4 cup milk for meat mixture
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder for flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg freshly grated for aroma
  • 2 tablespoons butter for gravy
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour for thickening gravy
  • 2 cups beef broth for gravy base
  • 1 cup heavy cream for creamy texture
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, beaten egg, onion powder, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, then shape into meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the meatballs in batches, cooking until browned on all sides and cooked through, approximately 8-10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add 2 tablespoons of flour to the drippings and whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes to create a roux. Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking to avoid lumps.
  • Once the broth is blended and smooth, stir in the heavy cream. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes until thickened slightly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Return the meatballs to the skillet and coat them in the creamy gravy. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to heat through and meld the flavors.
  • Serve the meatballs hot, generously topped with the creamy gravy. Pair with mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a complete meal.

Notes

Tip 1: Ensure not to overmix the meatball mixture to keep them tender.
Tip 2: The meatballs can be made ahead and frozen; just reheat in the gravy before serving.
Variation: Add chopped fresh parsley to the gravy for a fresh touch.
